I spilled gasoline (petrol for british readers) on my leather work boots. How can I get rid of the smell?

It will eventually go away. If you want to speed it up, use saddle soap and polish.

Stand them out in the sun to keep warm, out in the open air. The leather absorbed the gas and it has to come out. Don%26#039;t use anything to seal them until the smell fades or you%26#039;ll seal the gas in. Gentle heat (ONLY gentle) will encourage the gas out. That%26#039;s really the only way you can rid of it. Fill them with anything that will keep them warm. Hot water bottle, warmed stones.
Reply:Thanks for pointing out gasoline was petrol.I%26#039;m quite thick being British and all :P

Anyway if they are work boots the mud and dust will soon absorb all the odour up.
Reply:Clean with a baking soda paste (baking soda and a little water). then retreat leather with leather oil.
Reply:I would use a little dish soap and water, dry them and the only thing I ever use on my boots is furniture polish with lemon oil. Spray it on, let it set for 5 minutes and wipe it off with a clean cloth. I sell and wear very costly boots for firefighting and it is the only thing I use on mine, been working great for over two years now!
